Bali Celebration Of Virtue's Triumph
March 09, 2010 - Galungan is Bali's ten-day celebration of virtue's triumph over evil. The next celebration will take place on May 12, 2010. During that time, the tourists in Bali will have the opportunity to witness one of the island's most important and colourful festivals on Galungan Day.
Taking place between May 12th and 22nd, the event celebrates the triumph of virtue (Dharma) over evil (Adharma) and food is at its very heart, with richly dressed women travelling daily to make offerings at local temples.
Special regional delicacies are prepared for the occasion and many local restaurants will offer them at bargain prices in order to cater for the surge in demand for this type of cuisine during the ten-day festival.
One tradition to watch out for is the fitting of penjor, a long bamboo decorative pole that is fixed to the right side of the entrances to all family homes as part of the celebrations. The objects are normally dressed with woven young coconut leaves and are also adorned with edible items such as fruit and cake.
For many Balineses who live in other city, Galungan is a family occasion. And they will return to their hometown to join the festival with families.
It is an annual event on the Bali calendar, but as this runs in cycles of 210 days, it typically takes place around twice a year. Its next occurrence after May will be December 8th.
