The Amandari Presents Classic Bali Films

Ubud's renowned Amandari Resort will host a screening of classic heritage films on Bali July 1-3, 2010.

Held in conjunction with French Cinémathèque of Dance and the Swedish Dance Museum, a highlights of the three nights will be a rare screening of vintage films on Balinese dance made by Swede Rolf de Maré in the 1930s. Shown over three nights, the vintage films will be screened in Kedewatan's village wantilan, located next door to the Amandari Resort.

Here is the Schedule:

Thursday, July 1, 2010

Goona Goona a 1932 dance film directed by Armand Denis and Andre Roosevelt (65 Minutes). Released to widespread popular acclaim, the film's U.S. version was titled "Love Powder" reflecting its loose plot-line of the love of a Balinese prince for a servant girl, whose affections for the prince are awakened by a secret "goona goona" love potion.

At the time when "Goona Goona" was released in the U.S.A., the Nicholas Brothers, child dancers from Harlem were stars at New York's Cotton Club. After intermission, a 45-minute montage of dance moments by the Nicholas Brothers will be shown. Parallels will undoubtedly be drawn between Harlem and Bali in the 1930s, both islands listed as inspirations to Miguel Covarrubias who came to Bali in this era.

Friday, July 2, 2010

A screening of films shot by Rolf de Maré's 1938 expedition to Nias, Sulawesi, Sunda, Java and Bali. The film will be preceded by a selection of photographs of de Maré presented by Erik Naslund of the Dansmuseet of Stockholm, Sweden and author of a biography of Rolf de Maré. The film runs 90 minutes. Shown in two-parts, the film will run for 90 minutes and includes Balinese dances prepared and selected by the legendary Walter Spies.

Saturday, July 3, 2010

A special screening of "Island of Bali – La Isla de Bali" made in the 1930s shot by Rose Covarrubias and directed by her husband, Miguel. Shot in 1930 and 1937, the film traces Miguel Covarrubias' epic written study of Balinese life and culture - "Island of Bali."

Screenings on each evening commence at 7:00 pm with refreshments available.

Essential, An Exhibition By The Galang Kangin

One of the leading groups of artists in recent Balinese history is the Galang Kangin (Bright East). Founded in 1996 by 9 young artists, this group burst on the scene with a critically acclaimed exhibition celebrating the opening of Bali's own art academy (ISI) in 1996. With styles varying greatly from the figurative to abstract, all members of Galang Kangin share the view that the essential elements of good art are grounded in color, composition and balance.

In 14 years since the group's inception, many of its members have met with great individual success. In that time the group has maintained its ties and artistic commitment through more than 20 group exhibitions. Among the most important of these was the 2006 "Triumph and Defeat" exhibition held at Griya Santrian Gallery that saw early and contemporary works of each artist juxtaposed to demonstrate the progression of the group's artistic evolution in the decade since its founding.

In the current exhibition, Galang Kangin's members - Agung Putra Dela, Ardika, Ari Winata, Budiadnyana, Diwarupa, Galung, Gunawan, Muliana, Naya Suanta, Setem, Soma Wijaya, Sudana, Supena and Teler present their latest creations in an exhibition that chronicles trends in contemporary Balinese art.

The exhibition is starting from July 1, 2010 to August 2, 2010 in Ganesha Gallery at the Four Seasons Resort Jimbaran, Bali.

To know the exact location of Four season Resort in Jimbaran, you can ask Annora staffs who will be glad to let you know, where the exhibition took place.

Bali Joins Worldwide PechaKucha Event

Founded in 2003 by architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein, PechaKucha was initially conceived to provide a place and space where young designers could meet, network, and show their work in public. Over time, it has evolved into a massive celebration of creativity, with events regularly being held in over 270 cities. Last year, more than 6,000 presentations were given at more than 600 PechaKucha events.

The format of PechaKucha is simple. Be creative and do so in a presentation that can be boiled down into 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds.

PechaKucha Global Day for Haiti supported by the Bali Creative Community (BCC), the PechaKucha Global Movement will meet in Bali at the Gaya Gallery in Ubud on Saturday, February 20, 2010, starting at 8:00 pm. Intended to network and interconnect, the Bali event will be just one stop in a 24-hour global PechaKucha dialogue that will include 200 cities, 2,000 presentations and an estimated 200,000 people. The event will be broadcast in real time via their website with the 2,000 presentations then permanently lodged on line. The website will also have a facility for making on-line donations to support the Haiti relief effort via Architecture for Humanity.

This is part of a continuing series of PechaKucha events organized by BCC following gatherings at Museum Bali, Sanur Village Festival, Ubud Writers & Readers Festival and Serangan Island Green Festival. While the coming event seeks to reduce the suffering of the Haitian people, the overall goal of PechaKucha remains the facilitation of a creative learning process by making people aware of the unexplored power of innovative thinking and creative passion, and the sharing of ideas on how to create change and promote sustainability.

An open forum, those already confirmed to make a 20 image presentation at the Gaya Gallery PechaKucha Event include photographer Rio Helmi, architect Putu Edy Semara, sculptor Pintor Sirait, artist Marlow Bandem, Designer and surfer girl Audry Lamou and One-Dollar-for-Music Foundation member Raoul Wijffes.
